Guests are then encouraged to relax poolside at the Hacienda in Cabo San Lucas before departing with their fellow adventure enthusiasts for an unforgettable evening meal. Enjoy Cabo's legendary nightlife in town, but remember... tomorrow is an early day!
Arrival & Welcome
That afternoon, your Wide Open tour guide will conduct a fun but comprehensive drivers meeting to ensure that everyone is familiar with our tour cars, understands tour procedures and gets properly fitted with safety equipment.
Start your engines in Mulege
Guests will land in the palm tree-lined oasis village of Mulege, then strap in behind the wheel. With the sparking green waters of the Sea of Cortez behind us, the tour will cruise to the remote Pacific Ocean sands of Scorpion Bay, home to the second longest surf break in the world (over 1.5 miles long!) Lunch will be served featuring tacos with freshly-caught Lobster.
Once our unique dining experience is complete, it's time to hit the trail!
The tour will travel east toward the Sea of Cortez on challenging (and sometimes daunting) mountain trails that traverse the Sierra Giganta range. The scenic destination of San Jose de Commondu will provide the perfect opportunity to stop and take a break before climbing challenging dirt roads toward the incomparable mission village of San Javier.
Here, tucked high up in a deep mountain valley, exists a community built by Jesuits in 1699. Wonderfully preserved, it is as if you've stepped out of a hidden time machine.
A thrilling drive down the steep cliffs and twisting trail lead back to the Sea of Cortez and a final stop in Loreto, the first established town in Baja. Guests will enjoy a warm greeting and a cold cerveza as they arrive at the picturesque Oasis Hotel. Sunset arrives just as we prepare to take our Baja travelers to a great Mexican mesquite-grilled dinner at El Nido.
Loretto to La Paz
Some of the best off-road trails in Baja unwind before you. After leaving our breakfast stop, the tour descends nearly due west via a twisting valley trail toward the blue Pacific waters. The wide open fields around Cuidad Insurgentes are next, followed by fun, single-track sand washes through vast forests of Baja cactus.
We will enjoy an ocean-front gourmet Safari lunch on the enchanting Magdelena Bay beach.
Be prepared for even more rugged fun. Long stretches of tall whoop-de-dos are next, but relax; the state-of-the-art suspension of the Wide Open Challenge cars let you fly over them in total control and comfort. Our tour now heads away from the ocean and due back east for a final, awe-inspiring run over the famous Baja 1000 “Waterfall Stair-Step” trail used by racers for a final sprint to the finish line in La Paz.
One of Baja’s nicest cities awaits your arrival into La Paz. After a well-deserved cocktail and a refreshing shower at the famous Los Arcos Hotel, our guide will treat you to dinner at famous Carlos and Charlie’s. Viva Baja!
Once the tour heads back west to the Pacific, the group will make its way south near Baja Highway 19. A wide variety of vegetation and geographical terrain follow, with the colorful main streets of Todos Santos soon coming into view. A favorite spot of tourists and surfers, it's time for lunch at the city's famed Palapa restaurant.
Settle in for a great afternoon run to the sunny shores of Cabo San Lucas. The mountainous trails that snake through rolling plateaus are the perfect final test of your driving skills. The road dips and swerves, at times in stark solitude and at times though pine trees and woody shrubs. Finally, your guide will direct your group through a little known road directly into growing Cabo San Lucas neighborhoods. The sense of achievement is now palatable as the familiar arches and white sand beaches of the Finisterra mark the end of the trail.
All that's left to do is salute one of life's great adventures, and prepare for a final meal on your own in town and dancing the night away at the always-lively El Squid Row.
